Project: In 2009, responding to community appeals, Cardiff Council's Communities First office in Splott, Cardiff, asked the Wales Health Impact Assessment Support Unit (WHIASU) to produce a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) of Viridor Ltd's planned Energy-from-Waste plant at Trident Park, Splott, Cardiff.

Funding: Public Health Wales (PHW)
Date: 2010
Research Institution: CISHE research centre, part of the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University.

Project Lead: Nick Hacking MSc

Role: For this participatory action research project, I worked for WHIASU and PHW to help undertake a health impact assessment of a planned, and very controversial, Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility from Viridor Ltd in Cardiff Bay. I provided colleagues and stakeholders with knowledge of the planning system of England and Wales, interviewed hard-to-reach members of the community, facilitated a focus group, wrote the report, and was responsible for liaising with the community and other key stakeholders including Cardiff Council and the Environment Agency Wales.

Outputs:
2010 - I was the lead author of a WHIASU interim HIA Report written with Communities First and PHW staff.
2013 - I was a co-author on a peer-reviewed journal article entitled 'Health impact assessment in the UK planning system: the possibilities and limits of community engagement' in Health Promotion International.
2018 - I published further data and analysis from this case study in a peer-reviewed article about comparative waste governance between the UK and China in Political Geography.
